Mindful Drinking

Today a catch phrase by the liquor industry is mindful drinking. Along with the warnings to “drink responsibly” and “don’t drink and drive”, “mindful drinking” has been added to the repertoire. Mindful drinking means preparing before, during and after consuming alcohol. This means hydrating with water. The benefits of hydrating with water when planning to drink alcohol is to maintain a healthy balance of fluids.

  • Headache
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Sleepiness
  • Decrease in urination

  • Dry mouth and mucous membranes (lips, gums, nostrils)
  • Low blood pressure

All of these symptoms can also be related to intoxication. It is hard to distinguish the cause and effect, is it the alcohol or dehydration, odds are that dehydration is heightening the effects of alcohol. By maintaining hydration with a steady intake of water and staving off the combination effects it allows the body to detoxify from the alcohol effects. 

Binge Drinking Water Before, During, and After Consuming Alcohol

Most alcohol consuming occasions are known in advance which means that mindful drinking can be practiced. Hydration is of course essential every day, however, making mindful drinking of water before an event with alcohol can make it more enjoyable.
