5 Ways to Connect When You Can’t Meet in Person

If social distancing and enforced lockdowns have cramped your social life, there are things you can do to connect with the people you care about the most. Few require effort to complete, and you can use each long after restrictions lift. When you’re pressed for time due to a busy schedule or are geographically too far away to pop in for a visit, you’re able to reach out to your loved ones effortlessly.

What to Do When an In-Person Visit Isn’t Possible

Social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t reach out to family and friends regularly. It does require you to be inventive in many ways, though. When meeting in-person isn’t safe, you can use a variety of tools and techniques to give the people that you love a warm sense of belonging.

Here are five ways to connect when you can’t meet in person:

  • Through FaceTime. With crazy filters that you can wear throughout your phone call, you’ll have everyone in stitches when they talk to you. FaceTime is an ideal platform for many reasons, with the top being that it’s A) free to use, and B) accessible even without a Facebook account. As long as a person has access to Facebook Messenger, they’re good to go.
  • On Zoom. The video conferencing platform has gained a lot of popularity recently. It’s something you can do with or without a camera. It allows camera-shy people to still participate by allowing them to speak without showing their faces.
  • By old-fashioned postal mail. Who doesn’t love getting mail that isn’t just bills? Send your loved ones postcards, greeting cards, and letters. Draw pictures and send photographs the way that people used to and support the USPS.
  • Via email. You can send ecards and emails to the people in your life that have provided you with their email address. Digital mail is instantaneous, affordable, and fun.
  • With IMs or DMs. Chatting back and forth with an individual or group takes no effort at all and is something that you probably already do often. You can use whichever platform you prefer to create a private environment to chat with your family, friends, and even co-workers.
  • You can even create a group on Facebook that you invite people to join and share posts. It’s a great way to get everyone together at once. If you don’t have time to live stream or chat through a messenger app, you’ll appreciate reading people’s posts and comments when you have a free moment to yourself.

There are many things you can do when you’re unable to visit a person face-to-face. You’ve now got a list of ideas that help you express how much you care for them. It’s up to you to find which are the most ideal for working with today. You may find that your connections have deepened drastically because you haven’t been able to see people and visit with them in-person as frequently.

Find New Ways to Connect to the People That Matter Most to You

When you can’t meet in person, you can connect in other ways. The examples listed above demonstrate how easy it is to fulfill the need for social interaction. It may not be as exciting as throwing a party at your house or getting together with friends for dinner. It does, however, allow you to check in on your people, inquire how they’re doing, and share what’s going on in your life currently.
