You’re always told how important it is to stay hydrated, but do you really know why? Water is essential for life, and, without it, you can quickly become dehydrated and start to really feel the negative side effects. Every part of your body, even your cells, depends on water to function correctly.
Here are 5 tips for staying hydrated throughout the day.
1. Invest in a reusable water bottle
If you’re not at home a lot, finding water to drink can be difficult. Not every building has water fountains, and plastic water bottles are pricy and bad for the environment. This makes it easy to use lack of access during the day as an excuse for not drinking water. To be both hydrated and sustainable, invest in a reusable water bottle to carry along with you. If you don’t like tap water, you can also buy a reusable water bottle with a filter so that you can fill up your water bottle wherever you are.
2. Drink Water at Certain Times
It has been proven that there are some times when you think you’re hungry that you’re actually just dehydrated. By drinking water at certain times during the day, like before a meal, you’ll not only avoid overeating, but you’ll be able to make sure that you are have the right amount of water every single day. It’s also important to drink water before you are thirsty. If you are thirsty, that means you are already beginning to feel the symptoms of dehydration.
3. Add Fruit to Your Water and Your Diet
If you don’t like the taste of plain water but want to stay hydrated, there are other ways, though they’re not a perfect substitute. You can try adding fruits to your water to give it a taste you like, or you can eat fruits, like watermelon, that have a large amount of water in them. This isn’t enough to keep you completely hydrated during the during day, but it can add some variety to keep you from becoming bored.
4. Set a Reminder When It’s Time for More Water
If you don’t already drink water regularly, it’s easy to forget that you’re supposed to. If you’re not allowed to have your phone on you because of work or school, try using a water bottle with labels that tell you how much to drink at a certain time. Not only does this help you get the right amount of water every single day, it also helps you to make sure you don’t have too much, which can cause adverse effects.
5. Drink Sports Drinks When Exercising
While drinking water is important, if you’re planning on exercising a lot, it’s not enough to keep you hydrated. When you sweat, you also lose salt that is important for keeping balance in your cells and keeping your entire body hydrated and nourished. Sports drinks have electrolytes within them that will allow for you to fully hydrate when you are sweating a lot.
